About 700 kilometres north of Bangkok, Chiang Mai is located in a fertile valler some 1,000 feet aboue mean sea level. A stone inscription found at a temple in the city indicates that Chiang Mai was officially establisbed in 1296 by King Mengrai as the new capital of the Kingdom of Lanna, literally "million rice fields". King Mengrai invited his two fellow monarcbs, King Ramkbambaeng of the Sukbothai Kingdom and King Ngam Muang of the Phayao Kingdom to select the site of the new city, named "Nopphaburi Si Nakbon Phing Chiang Mai.." It has been called for short "Chiang Mai" literally "New Town".Since its establishment, Chiang Mai had blossomed into a glorious city of trade, fine art, culture and Buddhism until the Burmese took control of the city in the 16th century. After the two centuries of the Burmese rule, Chiang Mai was finally won back by King Kawila, the northern warlord, who sub-sequently restored the city on behalf of the Chakri Dynasty. After the fall of the Ayuthaya Kingdom to the Burmese army, King Kawila, Lord of Lampang, joined King Taksin to push back the Burmese in the North, By 1776, Chiang Mai was liberated, king Kawila ruled the North from Lampang, first on behalf of King Taksin of the Thaon Buri Kingdom and then the Chakri monarchy, until the re-establishment of Chiang Mai as the northern capital of Thailand in 1796.
 
Chiang Rai, Thailand's northern most province is particularly known and famous because of the Golden Triangle, the place where Thailand, Laos and Burma meet on the Mekong River. The area serves as an excellent place for nature tueks and adventurous outings. The city itself is offers all the necessities and comfort you would wish for. Plenty of accommodations, restaurants and entertainment possibilities.The most northern point in Thailand, Mae Sai is where to cross the vorder to Burma and where to get a l - month visa extention [sce p8]. It's great place cheap shopping.Chiang Rai was founded in 1262 by King Mengrai before he founded first Fang and then Chiang Mai. It was the first capital of the Lanna Kingdom.
 
LAMPANG OR KHELANG NAKORN of the past has the horse carriage as its symbol having monasteries built in Burmese and Lanna Thai style architectures and its famous place, well known all over the would, is the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre.Occupying an area of 12,533 square kilometers, Lampang is administratively divided into 13 Amphoes (Districts) Muang, Thoes, Mae Phrik, Ko Kha, Ngao, Chae Hom, Wang Nua, Mae Tha, Sop Prap, Serm Ngam, Hang Chat, Mae Mo and Muang Pan. Lampang is located some 599 kms., from Bangkok, accessible by Highway No. 2 passing through Ayutthaya-Lopburi-Nakorn Sawan-Kamphaeng Petch-Tak, taking a total time span of 7 hours and some 100 kms from Chiang Mai by Highway No. 11 through Lamphun, taking about 1.30 hours.
 
Mae Hong Son, Sharing a border with Burma as well as typical cultural influences is a mountainous, forested province that calls for adventurous treks and breath-taking sceneries, Its capital serves as the base for hilltribe country exploration. The mountains are home to some of Thailands ethnic minorities like Karen, Lisu, Hmong and Black and Red Lahu.Although it is the provincial capital, Mae Hon Son has a very small center so walking is a suitable way to get around. Most of it's accomodations are guesthouses and some tourist - class hotels. The few resorts out of town could be a good idea for nature lovers to spend their vacations. Food is, as every where in Thailand no problem Nightlife, on the other hand is limited to some Thai style cabarets on maksanti Rd.

Phitsanulok province covers some 8,658 square kilometers. The river side provincial capital is 377 kilometers north of Bangkok. Phitsanulok is situated on the geographical and administrative line uniting the central and northern regions.Phitsanulok was the birthplace of King Naresuan the great of Ayutthaya (reign : 1590 - 1605 ), and his brother Prince Ekathosarot. Phitsanulok has long been an important center for political and strategic reasons. Reasons. Phitsanulok was a major center of recruitment when Ayutthaya waged war with Brtma. And was the capital of Thailand for 25 years during the 1448 - 1488 reign of Ayutthaya' s King Boromatrailokanat.
 
Phrae is one of the most ancient cities in Thailand, an old establishment having been founded in the same period as Sukhothai and Chiang Mai. The town was built wver 800 years ago, allegedly by Thai Kern and Tai Lue people. It is laced with romance and enchants visitors with the famous love legends called "Phra Lor" and "Phu Chana Sibtid". The former name was Wiang Kosai, which means Silk Cloth. Phrae has an overall area of 6,538.6 square kilometers, and is administratively divided into 8 Amphoes (Districts) : Amphoe Muang, Rong Kwang, Wang Chin, Song, Long Sung Men, Den Chai and Nong muang Khai ; located 555 kilometers from Bangkok
